Assistant Ecologist, Taunton

Your role:

  • Carrying out habitat (extended Phase 1) and protected species surveys (badger, bat, dormouse, GCN, otter, reptile, water vole).
  • Undertaking background research.
  • Data management and analysis.
  • Drafting fee proposals.
  • Contract administration.
  • Writing ecological reports to a high standard.

Essential:
  • A relevant degree. We will consider candidates without a degree who have relevant consultancy experience.
  • A genuine interest in wildlife, natural history and conservation.
  • A high degree of self-motivation, able to work independently and under pressure to tight deadlines.
  • Excellent analysis and report-writing skills.
  • The ability to work well within a team, with good interpersonal and communication skills.
  • A full UK driving licence and access to a car insured for business.
Desirable:
  • Experience of UK plant and animal identification and survey work.
  • Knowledge of UK wildlife legislation.
  • Experience of using bat sound analysis software (such as Anabat Insight, SonoBat, Kaleidoscope).
  • Experience of GIS (preferably QGIS).
  • Experience of ecological watching brief (ECoW).
  • Membership of CIEEM (or eligibility to apply).

The successful candidate will work on a range of projects alongside experienced ecologists. You will benefit from a structured programme to develop your career in ecological consultancy, including training in botanical identification skills and training towards your bat and other protected species survey licences. We offer a competitive salary of £18,000–£22,000 dependent on experience and skills, 28 days of holiday a year, TOIL policy to ensure a good work/life balance, flexible working and a contributory pension scheme.
